The female pilots of WWII flew jets and sometimes new planes that their male counterparts avoided. They ferried aircraft from the factory to airbases in order to free male pilots for combat. They endured discrimination and received less pay; they had no military standing, and received no Veterans benefits. But they proved that women could fly planes as well as men, and in time, received their due recognition.

In Honor of Women’s History Month: Norma Rae (1979) Martin Ritt’s drama, based on a true story, stars Sally Field and Beau Bridges, and follows Norma Rae Webster, a factory worker with little formal education in North Carolina who, after her and her co-workers' health are compromised due to poor working conditions, becomes involved in trade union activities. Field, the former Gidget and Flying Nun TV star from the 60’s, would prove to have some real acting chops, and picked up an Oscar for the title role. Rated PG: 1 hour 54 minutes.

Come and meet new friends and join in on a game that is played all over the world. Mahjong enthusiasts of all skill levels are invited to play every Tuesday from 10am to 1pm. The sessions are open-ended and participants can play as many or as few games as they wish. Players with mahjong sets are encouraged to bring them, as the Library has only a limited number to loan.
