The Mortal Storm (1940) Stars Frank Morgan, Margaret Sullavan, James Stewart and Robert. Young Professor Victor Roth (Morgan) enjoys a tranquil life with his family in Germany. His daughter Freya (Sullavan) is courted both by Martin (Stewart) and Fritz (Young). However, when the Nazis take control of the country, all their lives are shaken. Martin must flee to Austria because of his political stance. Victor loses his job and is sent to a concentration camp when he speaks out against Hitler. Join local poets Mary Makofske, Donna Reis, and Donna Spector as they come together to celebrate National Poetry Month.
Donna Reis is the author of two full length poetry collections: Torohill (Deerbrook Editions, 2022) and No Passing Zone (Deerbrook Editions, 2012), which was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She is co-editor and contributor to the anthology, Blues for Bill: A Tribute to William Matthews (The University of Akron Press, 2005). She has written three poetry chapbooks. Her work has appeared in numerous journals including Atlanta Review, Cimarron Review and Delmarva Review.
Donna Spector’s poetry books are Two Worlds, In the Land of Gods, The Woman Who Married Herself, and Lessons. She is a playwright as well as a fiction writer and poet. A program of her poems aired on Australian national radio, and her poems, plays, stories and monologues have appeared in many literary magazines and anthologies. Her plays have been Produced Off Broadway, regionally, and in Canada, Ireland, and Greece.
Mary Makofske’s latest books are The Gambler’s Daughter (chapbook, The Orchard Street Press, 2022); World Enough, and Time (Kelsay, 2017); and Traction (Ashland Poetry, 2011), winner of the Richard Snyder Prize. Her collection No Angels is forthcoming from Kelsay Press this year. Previous books are Eating Nasturtiums and The Disappearance of Gargoyles. Her poems have appeared in 60 journals and 20 anthologies. She received the Atlanta Review Prize and the New Millennium Writings Prize.
Come and meet new friends and join in on a game that is played all over the world. Mahjong enthusiasts of all skill levels are invited to play every Tuesday from 10am to 1pm. The sessions are open-ended and participants can play as many or as few games as they wish. Players with mahjong sets are encouraged to bring them, as the Library has only a limited number to loan. This program is free, ongoing and open to players from all communities.
