Join Dashiell Jordan, head librarian, The Academy of Art at the Newington-Cropsey Foundation, for a lecture on the background and inspirations of the Hudson River School of Painting, the first American school of landscape painting. Considered one of the first truly American schools of art, Hudson River School painters - the term was initially used disparagingly by European art critics - were inspired by the aesthetics of Romanticism to depict the vistas of North America using themes of discovery, exploration, and settlement.
Mr. Jordan will trace the history of landscape painting and the various artists that loosely comprised the Hudson River School during a pivotal moment of the development of American fine arts. A Q & A will follow the presentation.
