How was Stephen Crane - who never served in the Civil War - able to portray accurately the experiences of the soldiers who served? This presentation will show how Crane, who grew up in Port Jervis, NY, researched and used many sources for his war story. The regiment that inspired and informed his fictitious 304th New York was the famed "Orange Blossoms," the 124th New York at the Battle of Chancellorsville.
Charles La Rocca is tha author of three books, two about the 124th New York and the third being an historically-annotated version of The Red Badge of Courage.
