The Last Vermeer (2019) Deception is a fine art. Based on Jonathan Lopez’s 2008 nonfiction The Man Who Made Vermeers, it stars Claes Bang and Guy Pearce. Set just after WWII, it is based on an all but forgotten true story about a soldier, Joseph Piller (Bang), investigating renowned Dutch artist Han van Meegeren (Pearce), who is accused of conspiring with the Nazis. Despite mounting evidence, Piller becomes increasingly convinced of Han’s innocence and finds himself in the unlikely position of fighting to save the life of the colorful man with a mysterious past.
