Frederick Church, a Connecticut native, studied with Thomas Cole for two years when he moved to the Catskills. He was to be Cole’s only student. Both Cole (acknowledged founder of the Hudson River School) and Church forged an “American” landscape vision and literary voice – grounded in the exploration of American scenery as a resource for spiritual renewal and as an expression of cultural and national identity.
A retired secondary and college Art Educator, Laura Nicholls continues her passion for teaching ‘Life Long Learners’ by developing and presenting Art History topic talks at the Desmond Center for Community Enrichment as well as several local libraries and community centers.
