Science Book Group Discussion of Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are? – Monday, August 17 at 1:30pm: please join the Science Book Club (virtually) to discuss Frans de Waal’s classic on animal cognition. Released in 2017, this book is considered “a groundbreaking work on animal intelligence [that] explores the intricate and complex nature of the animal mind.” Copies of the book are available at the Library; all are welcome to join in the conversation on Zoom. Virtual Movie Discussion: The Dinner (2014) – Thursday, August 20 at 5:30pm: join Laura Ford to discuss The Dinner (I nostri ragazzi), the Italian film based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Herman Koch. The Dinner tells the story of an ordinary meal among family that turns into a taut morality play as the limits of polite society are tested, and two brothers discover just how little they know about one another. The movie is available for viewing on Hoopla and on Kanopy; a copy of the DVD is available to be placed on hold through the Library as well. Digital Books, Movies, News, Education and Research:
- Explore this RCLS guide of free digital resources for children, teens and adults. The guide provides downloading instructions, too.
- Download the RCLS Overdrive app onto your mobile device from the Apple or Google Play store. Overdrive offers a huge selection of digital e-books, e-audiobooks and e-magazines to download onto your device(s). Use your library barcode and PIN to log into the app, then explore, download, place holds to your heart’s content.
- Research your family history using Ancestry Library Edition. Through September 30, 2020, Ancestry Library Edition is offering free remote (in-home) access.

hoopla: hoopla is another source of e-books, movies, audiobooks, comics, television shows, music and more, offered with no wait lists. Download the hoopla mobile app or stream directly. If you don’t have a hoopla account yet, just grab your AWPL library card and get started. And if you DON’T have an AWPL library card, hoopla will allow you to create an account anyway. Try it!
New York Times Digital subscription: through an arrangement with the Library, patrons are able to enjoy unlimited 3-day subscriptions to the New York Times. Click the link to get started!
BookPage: book reviews and recommendations for all ages. This is the digital version of the free magazine distributed monthly in the Library.
Kanopy Films and Documentaries: an enormous collection of classic movies, documentaries, as well as access to The Great Courses. Setting up a Kanopy account is easy with your library card.
Universal Class: learn something new! Take a self-paced course on any of hundreds of different topics.
Learning Express Library: need to prepare for an upcoming high school, college or graduate school entrance exam, or have you been meaning to learn a new type of software? Learning Express Library is a few clicks away.
Rosetta Stone: learn (or brush up on) practically any language you can think of on Rosetta Stone. Grab your library card to set up an account, so that you can easily log in and resume where you left off.
Staff Recommendations and Staff-Created Content
Library Out Loud: Barbara Fink interviews famed actress Elaine Bromka: Elaine performed her solo show Tea for Three: Lady Bird, Pat & Betty at the library on March 6, 2020. This funny, touching, and thought-provoking show chronicles the behind the scenes lives of Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon, and Betty Ford. In the interview Elaine relates stories from her long career on stage and screen along with the creation of her solo show.
