In Honor of Black History Month: The Color Purple (1985) Steven Spielberg’s epic coming-of-age drama, based on Alice Walker’s 1982 Pulitzer Prize winning novel, stars Whoopi Goldberg in her breakthrough role, with Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey (in her film debut), Margaret Avery, Rae Dawn Chong, Willard Pugh and Adolph Caesar; the film is the story of a young African-American girl, Celie Harris (Goldberg), and demonstrates shows the problems African-American women experienced during the early 20th century, including domestic violence, incest, child sexual abuse, poverty, racism, and sexism.
