Monday Afternoon @ the Movies: The Trip to Bountiful (1985)

The Trip to Bountiful (1985) Based on Horton Foote’s 1953 play, it stars acting legend Geraldine Page, John Heard, Carlin Glynn and Rebecca De Mornay. 1940’s Houston, TX: Carrie Watts (Page) is living the twilight of her life trapped in an apartment with Jesse May (Glynn), a controlling daughter-in-law, and Ludie (Heard), her hen-pecked son. Her fondest wish – just once before she dies – is to revisit Bountiful, the small Texas town of her youth. Along the way, she meets Thelma (De Mornay) who helps her fulfill that dream; a simple, yet spectacular movie with no violence, no cursing and no special effects – just pure acting at its best. Page would pick up an Oscar for her outstanding performance.  Rated PG: 1 hour 48 minutes.
