January, 2011: AWPL Foundation 2011 College Scholarship Essay Competition
For the fifth consecutive year, the Albert Wisner Public Library Foundation will offer two college scholarships to be awarded in a writing competition. Applicants will submit an essay, not to exceed 2,000 words in length, on the following topic: “How I can spend my life in Warwick and make a positive impact, locally or globally.” Submissions will be judged on the basis of responsiveness to the topic, overall literacy and grammatical accuracy, relevance to current events and/or community concerns in the Warwick area, and other criteria as the judges think appropriate. Authors of the two essays judged to be best of those submitted will each receive $1,000 toward the cost of college tuition. Any high school senior who resides in the Warwick Valley Central School District is welcome to participate. The student need not be enrolled in Warwick Valley High School. Essays are due to the Library by 5:00pm on Friday, April 8, 2011. Students should bring six (6) printed copies of the essay, together with a cover sheet showing their name, mailing address, phone number and email address to Kathleen Koopman at the Circulation Desk. The essay must not contain any information that identifies the writer; judges will not know who wrote each essay. To ensure fairness to all applicants, the April 8th deadline is firm and final. The two scholarships will be awarded in mid-May by Library Foundation member Glenn P. Dickes, and Susan D. Dickes. Mr. and Mrs. Dickes have generously sponsored the competition since its inception.
History of the AWPL Foundation College Scholarship Competition
Since 2007, the Albert Wisner Public Library Foundation has awarded college scholarships in an essay competition. College-bound high school seniors who reside in the Warwick Valley Central School District — regardless of whether they attend Warwick Valley High School, are home-schooled, or attend another high school — are eligible to apply. Warwick residents Glenn P. and Susan D. Dickes have generously sponsored these scholarships since their inception, and the Foundation gratefully acknowledges their steadfast support.
