Local author Danielle Henderson will talk about her memoir, answer questions, and sign copies of her book, The Ugly Cry.

Abandoned at ten years old by a mother who chose her drug-addicted, abusive boyfriend, Danielle was raised by grandparents who thought their child-rearing days had ended in the 1960s. She grew up Black, weird, and overwhelmingly uncool in a mostly white neighborhood in upstate New York, which created its own identity crises. Under the eye-rolling, foul-mouthed, loving tutelage of her uncompromising grandmother — and the horror movies she obsessively watched — Danielle grew into a tall, awkward, Sassy-loving teenager who wore black eyeliner as lipstick and struggled with the aftermath of her mother’s choices. But she also learned that she had the strength and smarts to save herself, her grandmother gifting her a faith in her own capabilities.

With humor, wit, and deep insight, Danielle shares how she grew up and grew wise — and the lessons she’s carried from those days to these.  In the process, she upends our conventional understanding of family and redefines its boundaries to include the millions of people who share her story.   -- Amazon.com

Stanley Kunitz was appointed Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress twice, first in 1974 and then again in 2000 when he was ninety-five years old, still actively publishing and promoting poetry to new generations of readers. In the New York Times Book Review, Robert Campbell noted that Kunitz's selection as poet laureate—the highest literary honor in America—"affirms his stature as perhaps the most distinguished living American poet."

About his own work, Kunitz has said: “The poem comes in the form of a blessing—‘like rapture breaking on the mind,’ as I tried to phrase it in my youth. Through the years I have found this gift of poetry to be life-sustaining, life-enhancing, and absolutely unpredictable. Does one live, therefore, for the sake of poetry? No, the reverse is true: poetry is for the sake of the life.”

Join poet Laurie Byro for a discussion of one of the most treasured and distinctive voices in American poetry. Click here to print out a selection of Kunitz's poetry or stop by the Help Desk for a copy.
