Warwick’s Prehistory: Archaeological Evidence
The Dutchess Quarry Caves & the Drowned Lands
The Dutchess Quarry caves yielded some of
the earliest evidence of human occupation on
the east coast.
The Black Dirt area was a huge lake or
bog in prehistoric times, and was flooded
much of the time in Colonial Days.  It
was known as the “Drowned Lands”,
before European immigrant farmers
drained it in the 19th century. This area
would have been attractive to the
PaleoIndians because of its abundant
game.
Who were the Paleoindians?
